WITNESS STORY on WYD08

It was on the 3rd day of the WYD08. I was waiting leisurely for a ride at the bus stop at Macquarie Shopping Centre, Marsfield. Unexpectedly two women approached me. They looked like mother and daughter, but they were not. They were carrying their orange WYD packs on their backs. The younger one said to me showing her ID-Passport: “We are from Puerto Rico. We came to join the WYD and we are pilgrims.” Then in a more solemn way she continued: “We want to announce to you that God loves you! Jesus died for us, but he rose again and he is alive today. Jesus came to save you!”

“Wow! Born-again Catholics,” I mused. Of course, I was thrilled with their greeting and message! We then chatted briefly and got to know one another. They told me their names: Maria and Zulma. When my bus came, we said “Adios,” and parted no longer strangers, but friends. They continued on their journey approaching people at the bus stop and giving witness to Jesus Christ, the light of the world!

I believe this episode and similar other inspiring episodes during the WYD are a sign of the new springtime of the Faith in Down Under. For as prophet Isaiah said: “The people who walk in darkness have seen a great light” (9:1) ~
